The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by Lyman Frank Baum and illustrated by William Wallace Denslow, is a children's book published in 1900. In 1902 it became a classic Broadway Musical and in 1939 it was adapted into film. Dorothy Gale, a young girl, and her best friend Toto the dog are swept away from their Kansas home and arrive in the Wonderful World of Oz. There is only one way she can return home to Kansas and see her family ever again. She must ask the Great and Powerful Oz to send her home. On her journey she meets many friends like Scarecrow, who yearns for a brain; Tin Man, who desperately wants a heart; and Lion, who is trying to find his courage. In order for Oz to grant them their wish, they must defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. Throughout Dorothy's journey, she gains many leadership qualities and truly becomes a hero to the wonderful land of Oz.
Purpose
The purpose of this website is to prove that Dorothy Gale fits the role of a hero. Using examples from the Lyman Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, this site will show Dorothy's journey as a hero based on Joseph Campbell's writing. We will first familiarize ourselves with Dorothy Gale and her character. Then we can educate ourselves as to what a hero is defined as and what they mean to or current society. Lastly, we will analyze how Dorothy Gale fits into our world and what she teaches the readers.
