Dorothy Gale
Dorothy Gale is just a young orphan girl who was raised on a farm on the prairies of Kansas. She is very adventurous and thinks that Kansas is very boring. In fact, it is depicted in black and white film in the movies. Life seems to be very bleak in Dorothy's perspective up until the twister takes her away to the land of Oz.
She was created by author Lyman Frank Baum in 1900. Her first appearance was in Baum's book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Her next appearance was in the 1902 musical adaptation. In 1925, the film adaptation of the novel cam into fruition but this isn't the movie that you are probably thinking of. The movie that truly made Dorothy Gale popular is the 1939 film adaptation. Judy Garland played Dorothy's role in the American classic, The Wizard of Oz and stole the audience's heart with her beautiful voice. This is when Dorothy Gale became one of the most well-known fictional characters of all time. |
Dorothy Gale is not unlike any other young girl in our modern world. She is an orphan and a loving couple took her in when she was just a baby. Dorothy refers to them as Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. She doesn't have many friends in Kansas aside from Toto and her foster parents. The only thing she seems to occupy herself with are miscellaneous chores on the farm. She is very clever, caring, and courageous. She exhibits no fear and doesn't hesitate to protect the one's she loves. Ironically, these are the characteristics that her friends in Oz seem to be lacking. Like most girls, she has quite the attitude and doesn't put up with disrespect. Dorothy is every little girl's ideal role model and a classic hero.
